The things a chromebook can do (updated)

I will list in this post features / functions which are possible to perform with a chromebook (yes, it is possible without Windows or Mac OS) which I tested myself. I will add more in future. Stay tuned and come back. If something is not listed it does not mean that it does not work. For sure, the list will never be complete.

  • Screenshot (press CTRL and the key above the 6 with square and 2 stripes), the screenshot will be available as .png file (see your message center which announces the file), (offline)
  • LaTex the scientific word processor - ShareLatex (online only)
    • Text editor (needed for LaTex) - Caret (offline)
  • Photo editor - Snapseed editor built in to plus.google.com for fast and easy processing (online only)
    • The built-in simple Photo editor is described in detail here (offline)
  • Autobackup from camera - Google+ photo app, jpg works well, not with my raw (yet)
  • Video conference - Google hangouts, Skype does not work (online of course)
  • Offline webpages - Pocket best used together with Pocket extension to easily safe webpages and other content to Read-it-later
  • Printing - Google cloud print works like a charm
  • Provide high-end audio by an external USB-DAC (digital to analog converter), like FiiO E17 ALPEN USB DAC headphone amplifier
  • Use 3G/LTE modems on chromebooks

MUST HAVE APPS
I am sure you have it installed already

  • GMAIL Offline (can be also used online) write where ever you are e-mails
  • Pocket best used together with Pocket extension to easily safe webpages and other content to Read-it-later

Black list

These programms are not recommended to be installed
  • World clocks is installing strange pop-ups and is high-lighting web-pages with green links asking you to go to strange websites (fastclick.com network). Really do not install it!
